SAND CATS and SEA TURTLES

Sand Cat

Photo: Tom McHugh / Getty Images
These little guys live in sandy desert terrain in Africa, Asia, and Israel. Small and stocky, weighing 1 to 3 kilo, they have sandy fur with spots and stripes and resemble small house cats with big ears. Litters are limited to 2 to 3 mini-kitties, and because they're an endangered species, Ramat Gan Safari in Tel Aviv has provided a home for a group of them.

The Wikipedia has an entry for sand cats here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sand_cat, and BuzzFeed has a piece here: http://www.buzzfeed.com/rethinkisrael/18-reasons-the-sand-cat-is-your-new-favorite-animal with pictures and animations in an article entitled 18 Reasons The Sand Cat Is Your New Favorite Animal.

I'm looking forward to getting over there soon to see them.

Sea Turtle

Hofesh
These guys are much bigger than Sand Cats, but are also endangered -- frequently caught in fishermen's nets and too many times killed. Sea turtles come in flatbacks and leatherbacks, loggerheads and hawksbills, Kemp's and Olive Ridleys. Some of them grow to 5 feet long and weigh as much as 590 kilo!

Recently our sea turtle rescue center found this guy missing two flippers! Needless to say he was having great difficulty swimming. So, they have fitted him with a kind of dorsal fin that really helped him out. You can see the straps for the dorsal in the picture. This really great story can be read here: http://www.greenprophet.com/2014/freedom-the-turtle-israel/.

The Israel Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center URL here: http://www.israeltraveler.org/en/site/national-center-for-sea-turtle-rescue and, if you are interested in volunteering, you can see the center's Job Board here: http://www.seaturtle.org/jobs/index.shtml?view=519.

The Turtle Rescue Center is a bit of a trickeration to get to from Akko, so it may be summer before I get the opportunity to navigate over there, but I do intend to visit.

"As long as the peace is under assault, the only force that can be relied upon to defend the people, and defend Israel, is the force defending its own home. The Israeli Army. The Brave Soldiers of the IDF!"

THE BULLDOZER

Brigadier General Ariel Sharon, Six-Day War 1967

Ariel Sharon, זיכרה לברכה, was born in Kefar Malal 1928, graduated from Geula high School, Tel Aviv, 1945, and graduate of the law faculty of Tel Aviv University. Active in the Haganna, 1945 participated in a section commanders course, and fought in 1947 as a platoon commander. Severely wounded at Latrun, operated as intelligence officer, taking part in battles of the Faluja Pocket. End of 1949 transferred to the Golani brigade. 1956 appointed commander of Paratroopers Brigade and 1957 studied at the school for senior commanders. 1958 appointed to senior duty in the Training Command, later appointed head of the Infantry School serving for 3 years. 1962
Moshe Dayan and Arik Sharon
WOUNDED & WORKING 1973
appointed commander of an armoured brigade, 1964 Chief of Staff of the Northern Command.
"Israel's Man of War", by Michael Kramer, in New York, pages 19–24, Aug 9 1982 considered him "the greatest field commander in Israel's history, and one of the country's greatest ever military strategists."

June 22, 1983 Sharon filed a libel suit against Time magazine in New York City for its publication of a fabricated story by its reporter David Halevy that he was responsible for the Sabra and Shantilla massacres in 1982. January 24, 1985, the Time story had been proven and judged as "false and defamatory".

Sharon served the Knesset in various ministerial posts including Minister of Defense Aug 1981-Feb 1983 and Minister of Foreign Affairs Oct 1998-Jun 1999, and elected the 11th Prime Minister holding that position from 2001-2006.

By the 1970s he had become quite overweight, which was accompanied by chronic high blood pressure. Late 2005 his health began failing starting with a mild stroke, followed by other medical problems, surgery to repair a hole in his heart, shortly after by a series of strokes, followed with another that totally incapacitated him and leaving him in a persistent vegetative state with little chance of regaining consciousness.

Late 2013 his condition worsened and by Jan 1 2014 he suffered renal failure. The Jerusalem Post report on Jan 5 2014 states: "According to the latest update from Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, Sharon’s vital organs are slowly failing, his health continues deteriorating and his life is at risk." We're now 10 days later from this report, he's still with us. The Bulldozer  does not know how to quit!

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon left us on Shabbat, January 11, 2013, זיכרה לברכה

Gilad Sharon: "He went when he decided to go."

“The war of independence has not ended,” [Sharon] told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz in April 2001. “No, 1948 was just one chapter.” He added: “The end of the conflict will come only when the Arab world recognizes the innate right of the Jewish people to establish an independent Jewish state in the Middle East. And that recognition has not yet come.”
